About this certification

Build a credential that gives your experience greater visibility

The ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) is a web-based, proctored assessment of functional writing ability. It measures how effectively a person can spontaneously write in a target language for practical, social, and professional purposes. The assessment contains four to five writing prompts covering different proficiency levels and contexts. Responses are evaluated by ACTFL-certified raters against the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. An official ACTFL WPT certificate is issued with the candidate’s proficiency rating.

Use the guided application to bring your profile, identity documents and qualification evidence together. You can save your progress, return later and follow the review from your applicant dashboard.
